Mission creep: Ukraine & Iran are not that far apart geographically

     I just got back from Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia.  That trip was an eye-opening experience.  The first thing I learned was that everything in that area is old.  Really old.  Nothing in America even comes close to being that old.  All those ancient castles, cathedrals, monasteries, mosques, whatever?  Old as dirt!

     In Armenia I climbed down a shaky ladder tacked to the wall of a narrow shaft approximately 60 feet long, into to a dark and scary dungeon pit where St. Gregory had been imprisoned for 13 freaking years way back in 287 AD!  And I also saw pieces of Noah's ark and the True Cross!  

 

     In Azerbaijan I saw cave painting left over from the freaking Stone Age!  

 

     And in Georgia there was a 3,000-room monastery carved out of solid rock at the order of the legendary King Tamar back in 1156.  King Tamar, BTW, was spozed to be a child queen controlled by a regent -- but she placed the crown on her own head herself and declared herself King instead.  Then she went on to conquer parts of Turkey, Armenia and even parts of Persia.  She was fierce.

      The next thing I learned during my travels in this area was that the ancient history of boundaries, ethnic identities and feuds also runs deep.  For instance, Parthia and Armenia joined forces and defeated the Romans at the Battle of Rhandeia in 62 AD and the King of Armenia then went off to visit Emperor Nero.  That long ago.  Boundaries were shifting rapidly even back then.

 

     That whole area has been a boundary-shifting battleground for over 2000 years. 

      More recently, the Ottoman Empire seized Mt. Ararat back in 1921 -- so Armenians all hate the Turks for that.  And Azerbaijan seized part of Armenia in 2020 so now Azerbaijanis and Armenians both claim the Karabakh region and they really really hate each other over that.  And then Russia seized the South Ossetia part of Georgia in 2008.  And Azerbaijan used to be part of Persia -- and then part of Albania!  

      And let's not forget about the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.  Faced with being taken over by either the Ottomans or the Persians back in 1801, people in the Georgia region appealed to Czar Paul.  "Help us!" they cried.  And he did.  Georgia became part of Russia.

      America claims to be 250 years old these days.  Hey, that's nothing!  A lot of this Caucasus historical stuff happened way back before even Christopher Columbus had even thought about sailing to the New World.  And yet.  The people who I talked to in this region all think that all this ancient historical shite happened just yesterday while Americans all gloat about how long ago 1776 was.  Go figure.

     And almost everyone I talked to in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia all hate the Russians -- but they also like the Iranians.  

     Next let's talk about geography, the whole point of this article.  Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran all border on the Caspian Sea.  Georgia, Russia and Turkey all border on the Black Sea.  Armenia borders on Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran.  And Ukraine and Russia all border on the Black Sea as well.

       Can you see where I'm hinting at here?  

      Mission creep.  

      How very easy it would be for the Ukraine war and the Iran War to sort of sneak up on each other.  Just think about all of the time, money, ecology, lives and oil that would be wasted if something as insane as this happens.  And yet our blind, deaf and dumb leaders seem to be heading exactly this way.

      And speaking of geography, how the freak is America gonna fight a war with Iran on the freaking other side of the globe when America's oil supply is dwindling fast and its economy is dwindling even faster?  It's not like back in the day when Papa Bush or even Baby Bush could bomb the hell out of Iraq with impunity.  American military prowess and its endless supply of weapons?  Those days are long gone.  And Iran ain't gonna oblige us by moving any closer to the USA either.

       And western European countries keep waving red flags at the Russian bull.  Not a good strategy.  Does Europe really want to end up looking like Ukra$ne?  I think not.  And western Europe isn't all that far away from Iran either.  It's really scary how quickly our idiot leaders could turn these two regional wars into a geographical conflagration that could burn down all of Western civilization.

PS:  Please don't let all these wars and rumors of wars stop you from visiting Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.  These are totally delightful countries!  Please.  Go see them for yourself now -- while you still can.
