Jet fuel shortages: Can you still fly to Europe this summer -- or not?
To quote my Franklin Daily Planner's recent thought for the day, "That's one
of
the remarkable things about life -- it never gets so bad that it can't
get worse." And speaking of bad scenarios, what will happen if all the world's airlines suddenly run out of jet fuel because the Strait of Hormuz is closed, nobody can fly anywhere and you're forced to cancel your summer vacation?
Just as you get all set to fly off to Paris or Florence
this summer, will the airlines suddenly cancel your flights? All that
money spent on tickets, all that effort spent trying to get off work, all those
hours planning your journey and learning how to say "ice cream" in Italian? Time wasted.
Totally wasted.
Last February, America declared (or didn't declare) war on Iran and then bombed the shite out of the Shajareh Tayyebeh (not Sandy Hook) Elementary School in
Minab -- just because it could.
"But what does that bloody massacre in
Iran have to do with my highly-anticipated summer vacation in Europe,"
you might ask. A lot. First, Iran reacted to being brutally attacked by closing down the Strait of
Hormuz. Then the price of jet fuel suddenly skyrocketed because oil was no longer pouring out of the Middle East. Then your airline notified you
that your flights were all cancelled and now you're going to have to tour
the public libraries of northern California on your vacation instead -- but if only you can afford to buy gas for your car.
Sucks to be you.
PS:
Will I be celebrating my 84th birthday in Baku, Azerbaijan this July as
planned -- or not? The suspense is killing me. But if my flights are
cancelled, at least I won't be in debt up to my neck for the next two
years while paying off my airline tickets -- or will I? Who knows. I may still
have to go deeply in debt just to keep the gas tank in my 1990 Toyota
refueled while I drive around town.
PPS:
Is there any alternative to flying that could get us across America or
across the world as quickly as airplanes? I asked a scientist friend of
mine. "China has magnetic bullet trains that go really fast," he
replied.
But how can that help me get swiftly to Europe? "Maybe they can invent bullet ships too?"
"No." Why not? "Because of the battery size. Even with lithium
ion batteries, the mass ratio is approximately 45. Therefore the ratio of battery
weight to comparable fuel weight might be only about 45/3 = 15. Still,
the ship would have to have a battery 15 times bigger than a full fuel
tank -- possible, but not practical. And they need to account for a motor efficiency that needs to be three times better as well. And considering how expensive these lithium ion batteries would be, it's not practical from a cost basis."
"Then what can we do to replace airplanes in order to get from one place to another rapidly?" I asked next.
"Two words," he replied. "Virtual Reality." Oh.
