My memories of an American airbase -- formerly known as Al Assad

My memories of an American airbase -- formerly known as Al Assad

I think it was Albert Einstein who said, "Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the true definition of insanity."  Call me crazy, but I just keep expecting my country to act in a moral, rational and truthful manner.  Ain't gonna happen.  Apparently.  Wherefore I must be nuts.

So when America and Israel "preemptively" attacked Iran and coldly murdered a whole bunch of sweet little schoolgirls and Iran's equivalent of the Pope, I was totally surprised.  But I shouldn't have been.  Duh.

When Iran retaliated by blowing up America's Al Assad airbase in Iraq, however, I truly had mixed feelings about that.  Obviously Iran had warned the Zionist coalition that if it attacked Iran first, "There would be consequences."  And there were.  The Iranians blew up Al Assad airbase.  Decimated it.  Tit for tat.  Retaliation.  Israel and America landed a sucker punch.  Iran fought back.  I can understand that.

But a part of me still has fond memories of Al Assad.  I was assigned there as an embedded reporter back in 2007.  I slept in a shipping container.  I ate in the DFAC.  I interviewed doctors at the CASH hospital.  I took showers in a portable latrine.  I shook hands with State Department guys.  I haunted the U.S. Marine Corps post exchange, looking for souvenir T-shirts.  I went on sorties in Humvees to nearby FOBs.  I witnessed the "Anbar Miracle" where Marines deployed diplomacy instead of gunfire.  I met and talked with sheiks at goat pulls.  I myself used to live at Al Assad.

Of course I can understand why Iranians blew up Al Assad.  It was an airbase that had deployed hundreds if not thousands of deadly jet plane flights that rained untold numbers of tons of lethal ordinance down upon innocent civilian populations without warning.  Death from the air.

The best part of me understands why Al Assad is gone because it represented the part of America that I detest -- the greedy warmongering bloodthirsty America with no morals, no conscience and no regrets.

     But still.

I do still have fond memories of spending time with the Marines at Al Assad.

"War" is hell.  It doesn't have to be.  There is an alternative.  We could just stop having wars.  And the American regime that is starting "little wars everywhere" right now is corrupt, bloodthirsty, criminal and immoral -- but doesn't have to be that way either.  We could stop being criminally corrupt.  We could stop having wars.  We could become law-biding, moral and actual good people.  Call me crazy for sure!

PS:  Biden, Trump, Graham and Netanyahu should all be deployed on the USS Gerald R. Ford and sent into combat.  Thomas Massie or Dennis Kuchinich should be elected prez instead.  Ain't gonna happen.  Sigh.
