On the road: Madam Jane gets philosophical in Stockholm

     I've already visited five different European countries in just the past13 days.  Getting lost in airports and trying to drown out snoring noises in overcrowded hostel dorm rooms has become my new way of life.  I'm currently shacked up in some sweet little cubby-hole hotel room in a suburb of Stockholm and nursing my poor worn-out body -- but still wouldn't have missed this trip for the world.  It's been totally educational. 

     I've also met a whole bunch of very kind people here in Europe who have gone out of their way to help this poor dazed and confused American traveler stop being lost.  And, BTW, life is a job.  We clock in when we are born and we clock out when we die -- then we float up to Heaven, sit in our Barca-loungers and watch K-dramas on Netflix.  And we all have just only one job to do while we're here -- to perform as many kind deeds as humanly possible.  That's it.  That's all.  And all these people who have helped this poor lost wanderer here in Europe?  They definitely have performed good deeds.

     And then my tiny little old-school flip-phone actually started ringing -- right here in Stockholm.  Wha?  I have no cell service in Europe.  How can this even be happening????  Reluctantly, I answered.  And of course it was Madam Jane, calling from Berkeley.  "How the freak did you even manage to do that?" I asked.

      "I have my ways."  Obviously.  "How is your trip going?  I'm concerned about you being out there all by yourself."  Not to worry.  According to Rudyard Kipling, those who travel fastest travel alone.

      "The reason I called," said MJ, "is to warn you.  Everyone in the human race is in this life all together and it is insanity to think otherwise.  Socrates was partly wrong.  Know thyself, sure, but also know that the rest of the human race is important too.  'Ask not for whom the bell tolls.  It tolls for you.'  People need to stop being so self-absorbed.  People need to stop killing each other."

      Yeah well.  "Tell that to all those world leaders who are happily spending every dollar, kroner, shekel, ruble, yuan or euro that they possibly can on inventing and manufacturing all kinds of deadly stuff that kills people, blows people up or tortures people to death.  Don't waste your breath on me." 

     "I won't," she said.  And then my flip phone went dark.

     Boy do I feel sorry for all the world's war-mongering leaders who are currently starting "wars" and committing genocides right and left.  They'd better watch their backs.  MJ is on to them.  Never cross Madam Jane!
