Deja vu all over again: Visiting a Ukrainian refugee shelter in Warsaw & crossing the Baltic Sea

Yes, I just crossed the Baltic Sea.  No, I did not blow up the Nord-Stream pipelines.

But before taking the ferry from Estonia to Helsinki, I visited a shelter for Ukrainian refugees set up in an empty office building in the suburbs of Warsaw.  Over the past few decades, I'd been to a whole bunch of refugee camps -- refugee camps in Palestine, Afghanistan, Guatemala, Jordan, El Salvador, Texas, Haiti, Thailand, Iraq, Honduras, Syria and who knows all where else.  Wherever America has attempted to bring "democracy" to a country, you can just bet that there will be a bunch of sad and pitiful refugee camps somewhere close by.  And Ukraine is no exception to the rule.

200 refugees from various parts of Ukraine were living in this shelter, mostly women and children.  80 children.  "Our children go to the local schools," said the woman who was showing me around.  "It's hard to explain to children why they have lost their homes and their friends and are now living in a country where nobody speaks their language."

Every small former office space in this three-story shelter contained at least two sets of bunk beds jammed against the walls.  There were a few communal kitchens.  The place was immaculately clean.  "The refugees here used to have good jobs in Ukraine.  Engineers, managers, shopkeepers.  I myself was an attorney.  Now we work in supermarkets and clean houses."  My host tried not to look sad.

"Residents can stay in this shelter for as long as they want but many choose to move on.  And several of them are waiting for the war to end so that they can move back home."  Fat chance of that ever happening, what with Zelensky receiving billions of dollars from America almost daily for as long as the war goes on -- so why should he end this horrible war when he has obviously found a goose that lays golden eggs just for him (and his secret bank account in the Caribbean).  But I didn't want to burst the refugees' bubbles so I kept my mouth shut.  Whatever gives these poor people hope.  Then I was served cookies that the women had baked themselves.

I took notes on what these women told me -- but then I lost the notes.  Typical.

"While I was visiting Germany with my five-year-old daughter, my neighbor phoned to say that my house was destroyed," said the attorney.  "My little girl's room?  Gone.  All her toys?  Gone.  I tried to explain to my daughter that we would not be going home for a while.  I didn't have the nerve to tell her that her home no longer existed on this earth.  And dear friends of mine were also killed in the bombing.  I was in shock.  I didn't speak for a week.  I just cried.  And now my daughter and I are here."  I gave her a hug.

Another woman in the shelter passed the time by painting pictures.  I bought a small painting of a mountain stream.  "That's in the Carpathians," the artist told me.  "My family went there for a vacation one summer."  Can't wait to take it home and hang it on my wall.

Later I talked with a Polish academic who said, "There are six million Ukrainians in Poland right now.  Around three million arrived here after 2014."  That's when Victoria Nuland staged her famous Maidan coup.

"The other three million have arrived here after the war."  And I know that two million Ukrainians also fled to Russia as well.  Geez Louise.  Is there anyone left in Ukraine at all?

There were also three refugee cats at the shelter -- and one refugee dog.  Even for animals, "War is Hell".  But at least these brave Ukrainian refugees have a decent roof over their heads, unlike so many refugees from American-supported wars on places like Libya and Yemen.

And while I was hanging around Central and Eastern Europe, did I also get to Russia?  Well, almost.  I got within spitting distance of Kaliningrad.  Does that count?

One thing that I noticed at the Krakow airport was the presence of whole groups of military "contractors".  How do I know what they were?  If you had been to Iraq back in 2007, you would definitely know what "contractors" look like.  For sure.  One group of about 30 men were clearly Israelis.

One major highlight of my trip to Eastern Europe happened while crossing the Baltic Sea.  Guess who got on the ferryboat with me?  You'll never guess!  The Harlem Globetrotters!  But I was too shy to ask for an autograph.
