Isolationism: Without its neo-colonial minions, could America survive?

 

      Like thought problems?  Here's one.  What if America's borders were suddenly and magically closed off completely?  Nothing could get in or out.  Even Hawaii and Alaska were suddenly forced beyond the pale.  Without its neo-colonial minions constantly pumping wealth its way, could America even survive?  Do the math.

     Theoretically, our answer should be yes.  We gots lots of smart people and lots of natural resources "from sea to shining sea".  This place is a paradise.

     But in actuality, the correct answer would be no.  Why?  Because we have become a nation of consumers -- not producers (unless you count WMDs) and because the notorious military-industrial complex has used Citizens United to sell American democracy to the highest bidder and because too much of our wealth and too much of our production is derived from our economic colonies (not us).  

     The rest of the world remains poor because most of its treasures are shipped here.  Most of the world is trapped in a neo-colonial extortion ring -- and we are the neo-colonialists.  Even China ships a whole bunch of its treasures to America.  

 

    Unfortunately for us, America too has become trapped in this vicious cycle of military extortion and economic rape -- because America has now become foolishly dependent on the outside world.  

      To put it bluntly, we have become vampires, depending on the rest of the world's blood, sweat and tears for our survival.

     But what if all that blood suddenly dries up, the sun suddenly rises and we haven't made it back to our coffins quite yet?

  

     Or what if, like Tom Hanks or Robinson Crusoe, we Americans become suddenly stranded here all alone -- and can no longer figure out how to be self-sufficient?

     Could we even survive if for some magical reason our borders suddenly became closed?  Without our neo-colonial minions artificially propping us up?  If we could no longer play Dracula to the rest of the world?  

  

     Hell, no.

     But we should be able to survive and even thrive -- just on the treasures we have right here.  America is a wonderland.  "The land of opportunity."  But too bad for us.  That's no longer how things stand in the real world.  Without fresh blood from abroad, we are doomed -- damned to a degraded life of immoral sacking and pillaging or else being totally helplessly forever dependent on a hostile outside world that hates us.  Too bad.  Such a waste of Yankee ingenuity.

     Let's just hope that the military-industrial complex doesn't suck Americans all dry too -- and that Natives abroad never get Restless and our neo-colonial minions never rebel.  Oops.  Too late.  A rather-pissed-off vampire-hating Axis of Resistance already exists -- and even Americans are finally starting to (very slowly) wake up from their vampire-induced hypnosis.

PS:  Why am I suddenly talking about vampires?  No brainer.  I'm actually going to spending Halloween at Dracula's castle in Transylvania!
