Rodeo Drive vs. Taco Trucks: The gardeners of Beverly Hills
While down in Los Angeles recently, trying to break into
show business as the world's first 83-year-old starlet, I joined a
walking tour of Beverly Hills. Shocking! Eye-opener! Those people are
wealthy beyond belief. I can't even imagine living in a house
with 157 rooms! Who the freak needs all that space? I don't care if you are president of Silicon Valley or
have won 25 Oscars. No one should ever
be that greedy.
I've gotta admit, however, that it was kinda fun walking past Elvis Presley's west
coast mansion, Mick Jagger's L.A. home and the actual house
where Michael Jackson bought the farm. "There is P. Diddy's party
mansion, Rihanna's tree-lined mansion and Hugh Heffner's Playboy Mansion," said our
guide. "Marilyn Monroe lived over there." OMG! She's my
favorite tragic heroine!
"One Silicon Valley mogul lives behind that
wall and another one lives behind this wall. That house over there sold
for almost two hundred million bucks." Wow.
My over-all opinion of Beverly Hills, aside from its over-the-top
decadence, was that everything there was insanely incredibly green.
So many trees and vines and plants and shrubs and flowers. It was like
the Amazon jungle around there -- that is, if the Amazon jungle had
approximately a trillion dollars worth of real estate concealed in its
foliage.
And everywhere I looked there were gardeners. Gardeners' trucks.
Gardeners' equipment. Gardeners everywhere. In fact all the streets
were empty of any pedestrians or cars at all -- except for the
gardeners.
Later, the walking tour took us by a local Beverly Hills park. It
was lunch time. Dozens of gardeners had gathered there to buy their
meals from a handful of taco trucks. No fancy Rodeo Drive gourmet
tasting menus for them.
I said to one of the gardeners, "It looks to me like it's the immigrant gardeners, not the ritzy elite, who run Beverly Hills!"
He laughed and replied, "Yes we do -- but only from 8:00 am to 5:00."
PS:
Let's talk about ICE. You just know that ICE wouldn't even dare think
about kidnapping the immigrant gardeners of Beverly Hills. Rihannah would come
out of her mansion and chase them with a rake. The ghost of Elvis
would haunt them away and tour buses gawking at "Homes of the Stars" would run over them.
But that does not mean that America's construction workers, housekeepers, farmers and other skilled laborers are safe from ICE in the rest of this country.
Bounty-hunting thugs in all the rest of America's cities are sending away to
Amazon to buy phony ICE badges and then heading off to construction sites, restaurants, hotels and farms,
kidnapping skilled workers and selling them to ICE for an estimated
$5,000 each.
Bounty-hunting thugs are destroying our country's
essential labor pool, letting our agricultural crops rot in the fields, causing our grand hotels and fine restaurants to struggle, and blocking our construction work. Only in America!
PPS:
This whole wealth-without-limit scene in Beverly Hills reminded me of Alex Krainer's
latest report, wherein he talked about our world's two major financial
models. "The American model, advocated by Alexander Hamilton, is designed to support small businesses and local markets."
The British model,
however, is based on free markets -- where entrepreneurs can go wherever
it is cheapest to produce goods. Slave labor, cannon fodder and
extremes in poverty and wealth are the main results of the British
model.
Beverly Hills is an outstanding example of the British model. I rest my case.
